Pegasus & Corringham 1st XI 168 – 10

Springfield 1st XI 164 - 10

This match was slowly slipping away from Pegasus & Corringham as Springfield’s reply stood at 111 for 1 chasing a modest total of only 168. Enter Matt Cairns for his second spell. After his initial opening five overs conceded 22 runs with no breakthrough, skipper Neil Gray was searching for some inspiration, and did he get it in no uncertain way. Matt Cairns next seven overs yielded only 13 runs whilst taking six wickets, five of which were cleaned bowled. Gareth Jenkins in the meantime was turning the screw at the other end, conceding only 28 runs from his twelve overs and claiming two wickets, one being that of Springfield’s captain, Dave Curtis for 67 who had originally steered Springfield to that seemingly comfortable position. Next into the foray was Daryl Hymas, asked to bowl the final over with Sprinfield requiring six runs for victory and P & C one wicket. The first two deliveries reaped two singles, the third removed the Springfield’s number 11 middle stump and thus Pegasus & Corringham had clutched victory from the jaws of defeat by 4 runs.

Earlier in the day the P & C innings had very much preceded that of Springfields as the total stood at 104 for 2 with 21 overs remaining. A platform built mainly around Roger Maxted (61) and Gareth Jenkins (21). Thereafter no one else came to the party as the only other batsman to score double figures was Martin Sayers with 21 and P & C stumbled to a final disappointing total of 168, which in the end proved four too many for Springfield.
