T.RIPPON MID – ESSEX LEAGUE. PREMIER DIVISION
Burnham Sports 1st XI 153 - 10
Pegasus & Corringham 1st XI 154 - 8
Pegasus & Corringham made it three wins from their last four games on Saturday and in doing so pulled away from the relegation zone, whilst their opponents remain rooted in it.
At the half way stage it looked as if the win was a formality with Burnham dismissed for a relatively low total of only 153, but the P & C batsmen were to put everyone through all the emotions of the spectrum before the win was eventually achieved. Burnham had progressed steadily to 110 for 4 with Dave Laurie picking up a couple of wickets and one a piece for Alan Patmore and Matt Cairns. Gareth Jenkins then ripped through the remaining middle and lower order to finish with the great figures of 5 for 9 from only 6 overs to leave P & C chasing the lowest total they have had to score all year.
The top order batsmen must have thought it was a formality but before captain Ben Francis, batting at number seven could sit down and compliment himself on a job well done, he was walking to the wicket with P & C in disarray at 30 for 5. Gareth Jenkins (23) and Ben (24) then put together a sixth wicket partnership of 53 before they both fell in quick succession. The score then stood at 83 for 7, and still 71 needed for victory. Dave Laurie (13) and Martin Saggers then also put together a half century partnership before Laurie was dismissed, with 19 still required. Saggers then took the bull by the horns hitting a six and two fours in one over (did he have confidence in his partner Matt Cairns?) to reach a magnificent and match winning 50 as Matt Cairns scored the winning runs of the first ball of the next over.
