Hatfield Peveral 238-9 (45 Overs)
P&C 186-9 (45 Overs)
Hatfield Peveral won by 52 Runs
Pegasus and Corringham's visit to Hatfield Peveral on Saturday was a pivotal
point of their league campaign. After 2 wins in succession a further win
over Hatfield would have meant the possibility of lifting them out of the
lower part of the table and increasing the distance between them and the
relegation positions.
Pegasus and Corringham were therefore very pleased upon winning the toss on
a green and damp wicket and decided to ask Hatfield to bat first. Added to
this the fact that Hatfield were missing some key players and fortune seemed
to be favouring the away team.
Thing's however, did not start well for the visitors with both Hatfields
opening batsman taking advantage of some wayward bowling and missed catching opportunities to score at a good rate given the conditions. Alan Patmore
however soon found his rhythm and bowled a good tight spell and was unlucky
to pick up only 1 wicket, finishing with figures of 1-38. Although wickets
were taken at frequent intervals, Hymas 2-32, Jenkins 2-41, Laurie 2-39, the
Hatfield batting line-up continued with their aggressive approach and in the
end finished with 238-9 off their 45 overs, Webb 62 and Garret 66 the key
batsmen.
In reply Pegasus & Corringham got off to a solid start with King 21
setting solid foundation. As the innings progressed it was becoming apparent
that a total of 239 was going to be very difficult to achieve. With frequent
rain breaks through the innings the outfield had become considerably slower and the Hatfield bowling attack gave little to score from. As the run rate continued to escalate and the pressure mounted it was inevitable that wickets would begin to fall. Only Jason Pike with a second successive league half century, finishing on 69 managed to resist the Hatfield bowlers and in particular Martin Allen who finished with 5 wickets from his 12 overs. In the end it was the partnership between Pike and Laurie that took Pegasus and Corringham to a poor 186-9 from their 45 overs.
Indeed in the end Pegasus and Corringham were left to reflect on a day of
missed opportunities with a relatively poor fielding performance which along
with the weather contributed towards defeat.
