T.RIPPON MID – ESSEX LEAGUE. PREMIER DIVISION
Pegasus & Corringham 1st XI 203 - 9
Hatfield Peveral 1st XI 204 - 3
With several first team regulars conscripted into the English Barmy Army on their current tour of the West Indies, P & C went into this first league of the season somewhat under strength. Losing the toss didn’t help the situation and as expected they were asked to bat first on a damp wicket after the week of inclement weather.
However the conditions didn’t seem to hamper the P & C top order as they mastered the seaming conditions and built a solid foundation. At 168 for 4 with 10 overs remaining the scene was set for a final onslaught. Daryl Hymas with 85 had held things together and was backed up by solid contributions from Roger Maxted (27), Neil Gray (35) and Neil Jardine (22). Unfortunately the middle order and tail end failed to deliver with P & C stumbling to a final total of 203, a total they may have been happy with at the start of their innings but one they felt was 30 or 40 runs short considering the position they had got themselves into,
In the previous weekend friendlies the P & C batting track has been a batsmen’s paradise with over 600 runs scored in one 40 over game alone. Thus as the wicket dried out, batting became, as expected, a lot easier. However the P & C bowlers and fielders stuck to their task with the ever fugal Alan Patmore conceding only 23 runs from 10 overs. At one stage the required rate crept up to 6 an over but the Hatfield Peveral No. 4 "Wiggy" Richardson took the bull by the horns and hammered an aggressive 88 not out complete with 6 sixes that took Hatfield home with a couple of overs to spare.
